We will use the story of The Giving Tree to discuss extractivist vs. reciprocal relationships with the protactile community. Protactile is a culture and language emerging from the DeafBlind community. As three individuals with our own relationship to the DeafBlind community (one DeafBlind, one Deaf sighted, one hearing sighted) we each engage with protactile in different ways and have experienced this modality and culture as transformative to our understanding and lived experience of interdependence.
